As a creative photographer I bring some artfulness to the business of sports photography – always thinking about composition; context and setting.
Within sport there is all that it is to be human – we thrill to the challenge; there is drama in the contest; tension in expectation of success or failure; and the sheer joy of achievement. Sports photography is more than capturing the action – although that is central – it should also be about the drama – capturing people when they are at the peak of their lives – capturing the “decisive moment”, as Henri Cartier-Bresson called it.
A few years ago I apprenticed myself to Jem Hall, one of the world’s leading windsurf coaches, and by working with him, not only have I learnt a huge amount about the sport – but also what makes a great windsurf shot. When I look through the viewfinder not only am I anticipating “the moment” – for the best action shot – I am also considering the composition for the best commercial impact, whether for sponsors, venues or magazine layouts.
