It’s always great going back through the archive in order to dig out some shots for a particular project and to come across forgotten gems. This is one such example. This was shooting for one of the events of the Circuito Mediterraneo SUP Race from 2017. After an event, most participants are looking for shots of themselves that show them at the “peak of their lives” or (on the beach) sharing a moment with friends etc. Whilst I capture those images during an event, I also look for something “artful” – that perhaps captures the essence of the sport or is just a beautiful image in and of itself.
I think this image falls into that category. They were a long way from the beach, traversing to the next buoy, equidistant and all in line, each at different stages of their stroke. There is something tranquil in the image – that captures something of the joy of stand up paddle – whilst sharing the activity, in this case a race, each is also in their own space – physically and mentally. Like distance running, one of the joys of stand up paddle is to get into a physical rhythm where the pendulum-like repetitiveness combined with the exertion leads to the mind being liberated – free to roam where it likes. My knees no longer allow me to achieve that mental state through running but when the conditions are right I can get it through stand up paddle.
